Well, because you can! Now that I was working with videos and youtube anyway, I figured to check out my fileserver and see how many captures where there. I was surprised to see that my fileserver had been capturing screens for over 1,5 year! Now I have strung them all together into a short video for all to see.

How it works

I used to have a stationary webcam mounted to my paludarium so that everyone could take a look at it from my paludarium realtime page (now at realtime.paluweb.nl). At the same time my fileserver had a script running that took an image from my webcam each day at 4PM (my time which is 12 noon “paludarium time”). As it turns out, this script has been running for over 1,5 years resulting in over 550 jpgs!

The resulting video

Using the commandline tool img2avi.exe I managed to glue together all these images into a movie! You can look through 1,5 years of paludarium in two speeds. The first one covers the daily screenshot at a 24FPS rate. This ends up in a 23 second video covering 1,5 years:

1,5 paludarium years covered in 23 seconds! (24FPS)

The second one is taking things a little slower. It runs at 8FPS, covering 1,5 years of daily screenshots in a 1 minute 10 second video:

Taking things slower: 1,5 paludarium years covered in just a little over a minute (8FPS)

So why would you put up a webcam to a paludarium and save a screenshot every day?
