Some of the most complex shapes and some of the simplest shapes I have printed for the paludarium&#8230; It is always nice to have the ability to print things you just cannot buy (and usually are hard to build otherwise).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The simplest: Alignment washer for the PVC feedthroughs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The awesome guys at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blue-lagoon.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Lagoon<\/a> built me a nice glass setup with holes in the glas predrilled. But these holes are drilled at 29mm, while the actual PVC feedthrough only measures 20mm. Not really a problem, there are wide flanges with rubber rings to cope with the sizing difference. Still, I was able to &#8220;misplace&#8221; the PVC elements in such a way that it would simply leak. &#8220;If only I had a washer at the exact right size&#8221;&#8230; Uhm&#8230; I<strong> DO<\/strong> have a 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>After 5 full minutes in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">Fusion360<\/a> (yes, it is free for hobbyists!) I drew a washer, 20.5mm inside, 28.5mm outside, 5mm thick. No strength required; it only need to align the PVC to the (larger) holes.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:37px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most Complex so far: 10W led chip fixture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most complex design I printed so far is without a doubt the led chip fixture. It is built out of several pieces that are either glued together or &#8220;click&#8221; onto aluminum heatsinks. On the top it holds the reflector and collimator lenses in place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"872\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-1024x872.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-1024x872.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-768x654.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-1536x1308.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5779-1-2048x1744.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Collimator lens and reflector are held in place by a 3D printed part<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the bottom there is a clip-on construction that is printed in two pieces then glued together. One end clips onto the aluminum heatsink from the bottom up, the other part has a ballhead construct to make the lighting direction adjustable:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5780-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paluweb.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/img_5780-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1139\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The bottom side of the power led fixture. This features a way of mounting the fixture while remaining adjustable thanks to the ballhead contruct.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hardest part was actually how to get the ballhead male and female sides the exact right size so they would clamp but not break. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are considering a 3D printer, I would say <strong>go for it<\/strong>! Prices have come down, and it will allow you to produce parts you could only imagine.
